iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro: What the foldable's camera lacks

The iPhone Duo costs $1,999 but omits the iPhone 18 Pro's telephoto lens and variable aperture. It has two 48-megapixel rear cameras, a main and an ultrawide, and can achieve 2x optical-quality zoom by cropping the main sensor. The 18 Pro adds a dedicated 4x telephoto that can produce an 8x zoomed shot, while the Duo's foldable design creates space constraints for extra camera hardware.
The Duo's $1,999 price makes it Apple's costliest iPhone, reflecting its two-in-one foldable nature. Its rear setup pairs a 48MP main sensor with a 48MP ultrawide that also handles macro. Unlike the iPhone 18 Pro, it has no dedicated telephoto, so its best optical-quality zoom is 2x via main-sensor cropping; the 18 Pro's 4x telephoto can yield a 12MP 8x shot.
Apple also omits variable aperture, leaving the Duo with a fixed opening. Physical constraints may explain this: foldable halves are thin, and cameras compete with batteries. The Duo gains foldable-specific abilities, including standing as a tripod, using the outer display as a viewfinder, high-res selfies with rear cameras, Smart Take, Duo FaceTime, and Kid Cue.
At $1,999, the Duo may remain a niche choice for affluent early adopters, while mobile photographers could favor the 18 Pro for its telephoto and variable aperture. Foldable-specific tools such as stand-up framing, group-shot automation, and shared video calls may appeal to families, creators, and remote workers. The tradeoff could push rivals to compete on camera versatility within thin foldable designs, though most buyers may still weigh price and zoom needs before novelty.
