Blizzard promises WoW: Forever will keep old class design rather than over-modernize it

Blizzard has said World of Warcraft: Forever will keep classes simpler while retaining engaging depth, staying true to the original MMO's core design, pacing, and tone. The beta's mechanical complexity reflects that intention, according to the developers.
Developers told TechRadar they favor less complicated classes while preserving meaningful depth, in line with the original MMO's foundational style, tempo, and feel. The beta's class complexity is intended to reflect that approach. Combat is slower than current WoW; early characters have few buttons, and one fight can last around 38 seconds.
Older classes had subtle quirks, like melee fighters weaving moves between auto-attacks. Raid and dungeon encounters are also planned to stay fairly simple, with challenge coming from preparation such as equipment, consumables, and group makeup. Players have found unusual items, including a mage-usable sword that grants extra fire damage to frozen foes.
This approach could mainly affect current and former WoW players, MMO fans, and developers watching the classic-style market. Slower combat and fewer abilities may appeal to those who value deliberate pacing and group preparation, while players used to fast rotations could find it limiting. If successful, it may encourage more studios to treat older design as a viable alternative rather than something to modernize away, though its broader cultural reach will likely remain within dedicated gaming communities.
