New Army autonomous systems command to be headed by three-star general
The Army announced that a three-star general will lead its newly created command focused on autonomy. Army Futures and Concepts Command will be redesignated as Army Futures and Autonomous Systems Command, or FASCOM, under Transformation and Training Command. Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle established FASCOM in an Oct. 2 memo, following an earlier announcement by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
The Army said at the Association of the United States Army conference that a three-star general will head its new autonomy command. Army Futures and Concepts Command, now within Transformation and Training Command, will be renamed Army Futures and Autonomous Systems Command, or FASCOM.
Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle established FASCOM in an Oct. 2 memo. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had announced the initiative a few days earlier. The service disclosed the leadership plan on Oct. 13, 2026.
The new command could affect how quickly the Army develops and fields autonomous systems, shaping training, procurement, and operational roles for soldiers. Defense firms and technology suppliers may see changed priorities and contracting opportunities. Because autonomy raises questions about oversight, safety, and human control, the command's choices may influence public trust and congressional scrutiny. These effects remain uncertain and depend on implementation.
