HII Wins Navy Contract for AUKUS Engineering Support

HII received a $56 million U.S. Navy contract for engineering and design work tied to the AUKUS partnership. The award to Newport News Shipbuilding includes an option that could raise the total value to $91 million. The work supports the UK and Australia through technology, supply chain, workforce, and digital efforts, including design support for the SSN-AUKUS submarine.
HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding unit has secured a $56 million U.S. Navy award for engineering and design services connected to AUKUS under Foreign Military Sales requirements. The contract contains an option that, if used, would lift its cumulative worth to $91 million.
The effort is intended to help the United Kingdom and Australia in areas such as technology integration, engineering, supply chains, workforce growth, and digital change. Designers and engineers will also assist with the SSN-AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine. HII’s broader AUKUS involvement includes Australian supplier qualification, training, and a December 2025 nuclear advisory contract.
The contract may affect shipyard workers, engineers, suppliers, and defense communities in the U.S., UK, and Australia by supporting jobs and skills tied to submarine programs. It could strengthen industrial cooperation and supply-chain resilience, while also raising questions about costs, technology sharing, and regional security. The option’s exercise may determine how much work and investment actually materializes.
