Shopify expands AI agent shopping to any assistant

Shopify will allow more AI agents to browse and buy from its catalog of over a billion listings. Shoppers can connect an agent to their Shop account and set rules like budgets or shipping preferences, with each purchase requiring approval. The move expands Shopify's earlier partnership with Meta's Muse and uses Shop Pay for checkout.
Shopify's Tuesday announcement broadens an earlier September arrangement with Meta's Muse, which had let that assistant browse and buy for users. Now shoppers can link any AI agent to their Shop account, a Shopify service for order tracking, consolidated purchases, and product suggestions. The catalog spans more than a billion items, including listings outside Shopify storefronts.
Checkout runs through Shop Pay inside the agent conversation, and resulting orders return to the Shop app. Shopify frames the setup as a personal shopper: users can set budget limits or require fast shipping, and every purchase needs approval. The company places this within wider efforts by Google, Amazon, and others to let AI agents handle purchases.
For shoppers, agent-assisted checkout could make routine purchases faster, but it may also concentrate decisions in assistants and require strong approval, budget, and privacy safeguards. Shopify merchants could gain discovery through more agents, while payment and platform providers may compete over checkout, data, and customer relationships. If adoption grows, questions about consent, fraud, and accountability could shape trust. The per-purchase approval rule may limit some risks, though oversight could vary by agent and user settings.
