New web tool builds custom crossword puzzles in dozens of languages

A developer created Crossword Generator, a free web tool that builds 13x13 crossword grids and supports 27 languages. Users can set grid size, place black squares, lock in chosen words, and let a constraint solver fill the rest from a large word database. The tool does not rely on AI for generation, though another version uses Google Gemini to suggest dictionary-based clues.
Tex Jernigan, a digital strategist, built Crossword Generator after wanting puzzles for a local coffee shop; the project began years earlier. He found that assembling a large set of theme entries is harder than expected, since only a few may fit together.
The free version handles 13x13 grids, while a paid tier adds larger formats from 15x15 up to 23x23 Sunday-style puzzles. Beyond English, it covers 27 additional languages, including Spanish, Russian, and Japanese. A separate option uses Google Gemini to pair words with dictionary clues, which users can replace.
Tools like this could lower barriers for educators, hobbyists, local publishers, and language learners to make custom puzzles without specialist grid-construction skills. By supporting many languages and adjustable sizes, it may help teach vocabulary in less commonly served languages. The option to replace AI-generated clues may appeal to users concerned about accuracy or originality. However, ease of creation might also increase the volume of low-quality puzzles, so impact may depend on how thoughtfully users apply it.
