Floating Nuclear Project Advances at Belledune Port

A small port in northern New Brunswick is being considered for Canada's first floating nuclear power plant. Montreal-based Prodigy Clean Energy is developing the project near the Port of Belledune after choosing reactor technology from BWXT. The plant would be largely built in Ontario, shipped to its site, and designed for replication in Arctic locations.
A northern New Brunswick port is under consideration as the location for what would be Canada’s first floating nuclear power plant. The project is being advanced by Prodigy Clean Energy, a Montreal company, near the Port of Belledune.
The proposed plant would rely on reactor technology selected from BWXT. Much of its construction would occur in Ontario before the completed unit is transported to the chosen site. The design is also intended to be repeatable for Arctic deployments.
If it proceeds, the project could affect residents and workers near Belledune through construction, port activity, and debate over nuclear safety. Ontario suppliers may see manufacturing demand, while Arctic communities may weigh potential energy benefits against environmental and sovereignty concerns. The outcome may shape how small ports and remote regions consider floating nuclear power.
