BAE Systems Promotes APKWS as Low-Cost Precision Rocket Kit

BAE Systems' APKWS laser-guidance kit turns 70mm rockets into precision-guided weapons for counter-drone, air-to-air, and other missions. The company says the system has been tested and fielded rapidly on platforms including the F-15E and Eurofighter Typhoon, offering a lower-cost alternative to traditional air-to-air missiles. It is designed to be scalable and compatible with U.S. and allied forces across multiple domains.
BAE Systems says its APKWS kit turns standard 70mm rockets into guided munitions. The company cites more than ten years of high-volume output and fielding with U.S. services and partner nations. It has been qualified on crewed aircraft, unmanned systems, ground launchers, and maritime vessels for air, surface, and maritime missions.
In 2025, the U.S. Air Force added APKWS to the F-15E, with developmental and operational flights and live shots against land and water targets for counter-drone work. A British Eurofighter Typhoon test struck a ground target; the system then entered operational use in about two months. Trials also involved the TRV-150, MQ-9A Reaper, and ground launchers.
If fielded widely, lower-cost interceptors may change cost calculations for defending bases and ships, affecting military personnel and nearby communities. Defense contractors and allied forces could see procurement shifts, while taxpayers may benefit if cheaper options replace some pricier missiles. The same affordability could also make sustained drone engagements more feasible, though broader security effects remain uncertain.
