Mamdani stands by NYPD Commissioner Tisch amid calls from socialists to remove her

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he has no plans to replace NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. His stance came after the NYC chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America demanded Tisch's removal following an ICE-involved shooting in the Bronx. Mamdani cited Tisch's record on corruption and crime reduction.
Mayor Mamdani reiterated Tuesday that Commissioner Tisch will remain in her post. He pointed to her efforts against upper-level NYPD corruption and to declines in murders, shootings, and shooting victims during their ten months working together.
The Democratic Socialists of America's New York City chapter sought Tisch's ouster after Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old Dominican national, was shot during a federal immigration operation in the Bronx. Homeland Security said he allegedly did not follow officer commands. The detectives' union president said Tisch was performing her duties and crime was falling.
The mayor's decision may reassure police officials and some residents who credit Tisch with public safety gains, while disappointing progressive and socialist activists seeking accountability after the Bronx shooting. It could intensify debate over local control, immigration enforcement, and policing in New York City. Communities directly touched by ICE operations and by crime may experience the dispute differently, and the outcome may shape trust in City Hall and the NYPD.
