Ericsson marks 129 years in Egypt at event attended by communications minister

Ericsson celebrated its 150th anniversary globally and 129 years of operations in Egypt at an event attended by ICT Minister Rafat Hendy. The minister said the company is an important partner in developing Egypt's communications sector and outlined priorities including future-ready networks, applied innovation, and Egyptian talent development. Diplomats and telecom executives also attended.
Ericsson’s Egyptian operations trace back to 1897, while its global history spans 150 years. The event drew Sweden’s ambassador, the U.S. and Finnish envoys, a Japanese embassy economic adviser, Egyptian government officials, telecom executives, and leaders from the Information Technology Institute and National Telecommunications Institute.
ICT Minister Rafat Hendy framed the partnership around three areas: networks prepared for future demands, practical innovation, and developing Egyptian skills. He linked 5G expansion to broader economic and social benefits, including better coverage, secure and reliable networks, and possible uses in industry, agriculture, transport, and health care.
If the outlined priorities advance, Egyptians may see improved mobile coverage, more reliable networks, and easier access to digital government services. Small firms could reach new customers, while young people may gain skills for jobs. New 5G and AI applications could affect farming, transport, and healthcare, though benefits depend on implementation, affordability, and widespread access. Telecom operators, universities, startups, and researchers may also be affected through collaboration.
