Los Angeles Adds Veteran QB Browning for Depth

The Chargers signed veteran quarterback Jake Browning to their practice squad on Tuesday. With Trey Lance on injured reserve, Browning gives Los Angeles another option behind Justin Herbert and rookie D.J. Uiagalelei. Browning, 30, had been unsigned since he did not win Tampa Bay's backup job.
Los Angeles added Jake Browning on a practice squad deal Tuesday. The 30-year-old quarterback had remained unsigned after Tampa Bay chose rookie UDFA Jalon Daniels as its backup; the Buccaneers absorbed $400K in dead money. Browning also worked out for the Chargers, while Kyle Trask auditioned for the same role.
Browning previously backed up Joe Burrow in Cincinnati. In 2023, he completed 70.4% of throws at 8.0 yards per attempt, with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions across nine games. Last season, however, he dropped three starts, prompting the Bengals to trade for Joe Flacco.
The signing may matter little beyond the Chargers' roster, but it could affect fan confidence and locker-room stability. If Browning becomes QB2, he could mentor rookie D.J. Uiagalelei and provide insurance for Justin Herbert. For Browning, it offers a path back into NFL work; for Los Angeles, it may reduce risk if injuries continue. Broader sports audiences may see another example of veteran QBs filling emergency roles.
