Balloon-Inspired Furniture That Is Strong Enough to Sit On

South Korean designer Seungjin Yang has created the Blowing furniture series, which uses balloons as the starting point for chairs, stools, and tables. Each piece is shaped and then coated with multiple layers of epoxy resin, producing a rigid, glossy structure. The collection combines playful, candy-colored forms with functional seating and surfaces.
Yang’s university training in Seoul centered on metal art and design, with extra coursework in furniture design. That background helped shape the Blowing series, which uses balloons as a structural starting point rather than a disposable party item.
For each chair, stool, or table, he forms balloons into the intended silhouette, adds seven layers of epoxy resin, then gives the assembled piece a final resin dip. The cured surface becomes hard and glossy. The line includes an armchair, stool, and table in varied colors; the armchair-3 measures 35.4 by 25.5 by 28.3 inches.
This playful furniture may shift how consumers and designers view everyday materials, showing balloons can become durable objects. It could appeal to collectors, interior stylists, and people seeking nostalgic statement pieces. Because production likely requires skilled handwork and resin, wider adoption may remain limited to niche design markets. It may also encourage designers to experiment with unexpected materials, though questions about care and longevity could shape its long-term reception.
