PlayStation Reaffirms Digital-Only Future for New PS5 Games

PlayStation has repeated its plan to stop producing physical discs for new games beginning in January 2028. The policy means upcoming PlayStation titles will be sold only as digital downloads through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers, while existing discs remain usable. The reminder accompanied the reveal of a PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black model for the Japanese market.
PlayStation restated its disc deadline alongside a Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition in Midnight Black. That console lacks a disc drive and has 825GB of storage, while a matching disc drive arrives November 19 for buyers who want physical compatibility. The system is limited to Japanese-language settings and Japan-registered accounts, though the digital-only policy applies globally.
The company says new PlayStation titles arriving from January 2028 will be download-only through its store and other retailers. Games pressed before that date stay available on disc. Sony has also argued in a class-action defense that digital game purchases should not be equated with traditional ownership.
The shift could affect players who prefer physical copies, collectors, and retailers that rely on disc sales. It may make access more dependent on online storefronts and account policies, potentially limiting lending, resale, or offline use. At the same time, digital distribution could offer convenience and broader availability. How these trade-offs play out may depend on consumer response, retailer adaptation, and whether alternatives for preserving game history emerge.
