HBO Plans Five-Episode Girls Revival for 2027

HBO has ordered a five-episode limited revival of Girls, with production scheduled to begin in 2027, a decade after the original series ended. Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Andrew Rannells are set to return, while former co-showrunner Jenni Konner is not listed. Dunham said the characters came back to her around her 40th birthday, and she is also developing a Broadway musical adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You with Carly Rae Jepsen.
HBO revealed the revival on Tuesday. The limited series will consist of five episodes, with filming expected to begin in 2027—a decade after the comedy wrapped its original run. Dunham, Williams, Kirke, Mamet, and Rannells will reprise their roles as Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, Shoshanna, and Elijah.
Jenni Konner, who helped run the show earlier, is absent from the announced returning team. Dunham has said she waited until a story felt necessary, and that the characters resurfaced near her 40th birthday. All six seasons of the original run remain available on HBO Max and DVD. Dunham is also working with Carly Rae Jepsen on a Broadway musical based on 10 Things I Hate About You, set for 2027.
The revival could resonate most with viewers who grew up alongside the original, prompting nostalgia-driven streaming and renewed discussion about friendship, ambition, and adulthood. HBO Max may see a bump in attention as old episodes are revisited. The returning cast could gain new visibility, while the absence of a key former collaborator may invite media scrutiny of the show’s workplace history. Dunham’s simultaneous Broadway project may further shape her public profile, though its actual cultural reach may depend on execution and reception.
