Quoin’s QRX003 Receives EMA Orphan Drug Status for Peeling Skin Syndrome

The European Medicines Agency has granted Orphan Drug Designation to Quoin Pharmaceuticals’ QRX003 for treating Peeling Skin Syndrome. The designation provides incentives and, if the product is approved in the EU, 10 years of market exclusivity for the rare skin condition. Quoin says it plans to begin the first formal clinical trial in Peeling Skin Syndrome before the end of the year.
Quoin’s QRX003 has now received European orphan status for Peeling Skin Syndrome, adding to earlier US designations for the same condition: Pediatric Rare Disease and Fast Track. The EMA designation can bring protocol advice, reduced fees, and grant access; approval would yield ten years of EU exclusivity for similar products.
The candidate is also in late-stage testing for Netherton Syndrome, where it holds orphan status in the US, Europe, and Japan, plus US pediatric rare disease and fast track designations. Quoin plans to begin the first formal Peeling Skin Syndrome trial before year end.
For people with Peeling Skin Syndrome, a rare and severe skin condition, the designation may improve prospects for a first formal trial and eventual approved therapy. European incentives could make development more attractive, potentially expanding treatment options and reducing burdens on patients and caregivers. If approved, market exclusivity may support commercial viability, though access and affordability may depend on later pricing, reimbursement, and health-system decisions.
