Starknet Introduces Shadow Accounts to Separate DeFi Activity From Main Wallets
Starknet has launched Shadow Accounts, which provide persistent separate addresses for DeFi use and obscure the link to a user’s primary wallet. Users can fund these accounts from shielded balances in the STRK20 privacy pool and manage positions while onchain balances and transactions remain visible. The feature currently works through vaults, with possible future support for lending, staking, derivatives, prediction markets, and NFTs.
Starknet, an Ethereum layer-2, has rolled out Shadow Accounts through StarkWare. These are long-lived, distinct addresses meant for DeFi, helping mask their connection to a user's primary wallet. Even so, each account's holdings, transfers, and positions stay publicly visible onchain.
Funding comes from shielded assets in Starknet's STRK20 privacy pool. After an app adds support, a user can link a wallet, toggle into private mode, and place assets in a vault; the Shadow Account holds the position until withdrawal back to a shielded balance. Vaults are supported now, with possible later uses including lending, staking, derivatives, prediction markets, NFTs, and liquidity provision.
For DeFi users, Shadow Accounts may reduce easy linkage between everyday wallets and trading or lending positions, though onchain visibility remains. Observers, counterparties, and compliance teams could still analyze activity, so the feature may shift privacy expectations rather than eliminate traceability. Its wider effect could depend on adoption and future integrations, potentially influencing how individuals and services balance confidentiality with transparency in onchain finance.
