Turkey’s Individual Crypto Volume Hits $40 Billion, Fifth in Global Adoption

A Ripple report says Turkey’s individual crypto transaction volume reached $40 billion at the start of 2026, growing 7% annually. Turkey also moved from seventh to fifth in TRM Labs’ global crypto adoption index. The report credits lira pressure and high inflation for driving demand, while new regulations have encouraged banks and financial institutions to participate.
Ripple’s data places Turkey’s individual crypto turnover at $40 billion as 2026 began, up 7% year over year. The country also rose two places, from seventh to fifth, in TRM Labs’ adoption ranking. Ripple estimates Turkey’s total yearly crypto activity is approaching $200 billion, with roughly $878 billion flowing in from 2021 through mid-2025.
A July 2024 law assigned crypto oversight to the Capital Markets Board. Later rules in March 2025 set licensing, capital, and anti-money-laundering standards; custody rules began applying in June 2026. Garanti BBVA Crypto uses Ripple Custody, while RLUSD is available on Turkish exchanges. Ripple’s MEA head, Reece Merrick, links local demand to savings protection.
Turkish households and small businesses may increasingly use stablecoins to shield savings from lira volatility and inflation. Banks, custodians, exchanges could gain from clearer rules, but compliance costs may favor larger players. Wider adoption could improve access to dollar-linked liquidity, yet may also raise questions about consumer protection, illicit finance, and reliance on dollar-backed stablecoins. Regulators may need to balance innovation with safeguards.
