Epic launches rebuilt Epic Games Store client with speed claims

Epic has launched a preview rebuild of the Epic Games Store client for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The company claims the new launcher starts twice as fast and reaches the store page 46% faster than Steam from a cold start, though PC Gamer has not independently tested it. The redesigned library can import shortcuts from Steam and other clients, and Epic says AI coding tools were used to write new code.
Epic's preview client is available for Windows and Mac, and Linux support arrives for the first time. During an advance demo, PC Gamer observed what looked like a meaningful speed gain. Epic says an outside vendor checked its performance figures, but independent testing has not yet occurred.
The rebuilt launcher uses a new architecture and a different technology stack. Epic's Martin Keely said AI helped create and review fresh features rather than merely analyze old code. The redesigned library can pull in shortcuts for games installed through Steam and other services. Epic has also faced attention for an AI-first directive on an unannounced Marvel and Star Wars shooter.
The rebuilt store could affect PC gamers, developers, and platform competitors. Faster startup and library imports may reduce friction for players juggling multiple launchers, potentially making Epic more competitive with Steam. AI-written code may shape expectations about software labor and quality, while raising questions about transparency and trust. If performance claims hold, other storefronts could feel pressure to improve speed and interoperability; if not, skepticism about AI-driven development may grow.
