Tank Notches Record 12th Adult R&B Airplay No. 1, Passing Charlie Wilson
Tank earned his 12th No. 1 on Billboard's Adult R&B Airplay chart dated Oct. 17, breaking a tie with Charlie Wilson for the most leaders by a male artist in the chart's 33-year history. His song 'YES' climbed to the top and was the format's Greatest Gainer for the tracking week of Oct. 2-8. The track interpolates Floetry's 'Say Yes,' with Marsha Ambrosius and Natalie Stewart credited as songwriters.
Tank’s “YES,” issued via R&B Money/BMG, moved from No. 2 to No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart dated Oct. 17. It was the week’s biggest airplay gainer at the format for Oct. 2–8, according to Luminate. The song takes the top spot from October London’s “Silent Treatment,” which had held it for one week.
The track borrows from Floetry’s 2003 chart-topper “Say Yes,” a seven-week No. 1, leading to songwriting credits for Marsha Ambrosius and Natalie Stewart. Tank now has 12 Adult R&B Airplay leaders, second overall to Alicia Keys’ 14 and one ahead of Charlie Wilson’s 11 among male artists.
This milestone may reinforce adult R&B radio’s role in sustaining veteran artists and could draw more attention to interpolation-based hits that connect contemporary listeners with earlier R&B catalog. Fans of Tank and Floetry, R&B radio audiences, and the credited songwriters may see renewed interest in their work. It could also encourage labels and programmers to keep investing in adult R&B formats, though its broader cultural effect is likely modest and gradual.
