Merck Opens $550M ADVANCE Research Facility in Pennsylvania

Merck has opened a new research facility called ADVANCE at its West Point, Pennsylvania campus. The $550 million investment adds robotic automation and AI tools for analyzing biological samples from clinical programs. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Merck leaders attended the ribbon-cutting.
Merck's new ADVANCE site sits on its West Point, Pennsylvania campus, a 400-acre complex that serves as its largest combined research and human-health manufacturing location. The company traces the site to the 1953 merger with Sharp & Dohme and says it is Montgomery County's biggest employer and ranks seventh among private employers in the state.
The $550 million project is part of Merck's previously announced $70 billion U.S. manufacturing and R&D pledge, with funds also directed to the nearby Spring House Innovation Park. Over 35 years, Merck reports more than $15 billion in West Point capital spending, sustaining roughly 800 construction, engineering, and contracting jobs.
The facility may speed Merck's analysis of clinical samples, potentially shortening some development timelines and bringing therapies to patients sooner. For Pennsylvania, it could strengthen the region's life-sciences cluster, supporting specialized construction, engineering, and research jobs. Local suppliers and universities may see spillover demand for talent and services. Automation and AI could also shift some laboratory roles, so net employment effects may depend on whether new positions offset displaced tasks. Patients and health systems could benefit if faster research yields effective treatments.
