Sony unveils $400 ECM-W5 wireless mic kit to challenge DJI

Sony announced the ECM-W5, a $400 wireless microphone package with two transmitters and one receiver. It can capture 96kHz audio from up to 500 meters in line-of-sight conditions and supports 32-bit float recording through 64GB of built-in memory on each transmitter. The kit is designed for Sony Alpha cameras via the Multi Interface Shoe, but it also works with phones or computers over USB-C, and preorders are open ahead of a November release.
Sony's ECM-W5 package pairs two transmitters with one receiver. It captures 96kHz sound at distances up to 500 meters when line of sight is clear, and each transmitter stores 32-bit float files in 64GB of onboard storage. The system connects directly to Sony Alpha cameras through the Multi Interface Shoe, while USB-C lets it work with phones and computers.
Extra transmitters cost $120, allowing as many as four simultaneous tracks. Each transmitter offers 11 hours of battery life and magnetic mounting plates. A receiver sold separately is priced at $190. Preorders are open now, with shipping planned for November. The kit costs $400, compared with DJI's $259 Mic 3 and $99 Mic Mini.
The ECM-W5 may appeal most to Sony camera owners, independent filmmakers, journalists, and content creators who want cleaner audio with less setup. Its higher price could keep casual users with cheaper DJI options, while 32-bit float and backup recording may reduce retakes and editing work for professionals. Wider adoption of such tools could make high-quality wireless audio more routine in everyday video, though cost and ecosystem compatibility may shape who benefits.
