Peven Everett returns to Gorillaz stage after cancer treatment progress

Peven Everett joined Gorillaz in Chicago on October 8 for his first performance with the group in years, following a milestone in his stage 4 lung cancer treatment. He performed 'Strobelite' and sang Bobby Womack's parts on 'Stylo', with Damon Albarn hugging him as he appeared emotional. Everett said the show was the hardest he had ever done but he would do anything for Albarn, Jamie Hewlett and Gorillaz.
Peven Everett, a Chicago-born artist, began gaining attention in 1996 through a collaboration with producer Roy Davis Jr. on “Gabriel,” which reached the UK charts. He later founded Studio Confession in 1999 and released solo material, including “Feelin’ You In And Out” and “Put Your Back Into It.”
His Gorillaz connection dates to the 2017 album Humanz, where he contributed to “Strobelite” and the deluxe track “Halfway to the Halfway House,” then toured with the group. In 2024, he received a stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis. In August 2026, he marked a treatment milestone by ringing a hospital bell.
Everett’s return may resonate with fans who followed his health struggle and with others facing serious illness, offering a visible example of perseverance. For Gorillaz, the moment could deepen audience connection and highlight how live music can accommodate recovery and collaboration. It may also draw renewed attention to treatment costs and support networks, though the story’s impact remains personal and symbolic rather than broadly measurable.
