September Brings 38 New Unicorns as Chip, Fintech and Space Startups Lead

The Crunchbase Unicorn Board added 38 companies in September 2026, increasing its total value by $71 billion. Semiconductors, financial services, and space technology produced the most new unicorns, while others came from biotech, AI, security, and frontier labs. Through September, 311 companies have joined the board this year, putting 2026 on pace to be the second-highest year for new unicorn creation after 2021.
September’s 38 additions lifted the Crunchbase Unicorn Board by $71 billion. Semiconductor, financial-services and space companies accounted for the largest share of newcomers, with others spanning biotech, AI infrastructure and training, security and frontier labs. Twenty-one were based in the U.S.; China contributed six and the U.K. three, while eight other nations each supplied one.
Year-to-date entries reached 311 through September, a pace behind only 2021, when more than 600 companies joined. Notable valuation jumps included Cognition, Crusoe and Mistral, whose reported values rose to $48 billion, $31 billion and $24.4 billion, respectively.
The surge could affect investors, employees and customers in chipmaking, payments and space technology. More capital may accelerate product development and hiring, potentially improving access to faster computing, digital payments and space-related services. At the same time, high valuations may raise pressure on startups to grow quickly, which could influence labor markets, competition and consumer prices. Governments and regulators may also pay closer attention as these technologies scale.
