s&box Overhauls User-Made Games and Goes Free-to-Play After Rocky Launch

Facepunch Studios' s&box launched in April to negative reviews, complaints about low-quality AI-generated games, and falling player counts. Creator Garry Newman said the team will shift focus from engine and developer tools to the player experience, including more NPCs, vehicles, and customization in sandbox mode. He also plans a greenlight-style system for user-made games and will make the platform free-to-play sooner than expected.
s&box arrived in April and quickly drew criticism, including complaints that AI-generated content was flooding its user-made game library. Player numbers fell soon after. Garry Newman, the project's creator, has said the studio will now prioritize what players do in the platform rather than only refining its engine and creator tools.
The planned changes include a curated approval process for user-made games, a revised Play Fund that requires applications, and removal of titles deemed low-effort. s&box will become free-to-play before the end of 2026; existing buyers will receive exclusive Steam items, with extra rewards for those who paid $20 rather than $10. The "Terry" character model is also being replaced by generic humans.
The shift may affect players, amateur creators, and platform moderators. Free access could draw more users, while stricter curation may reduce visibility for low-effort uploads and reward creators who meet higher standards. If discovery improves, s&box could offer a test case for balancing open user-generated content with quality control. However, outcomes depend on execution and community response.
