Drakeo the Ruler Estate Reaches Settlement Over 2021 Festival Killing
The estate of Drakeo the Ruler settled its remaining negligence claims with Live Nation, C3 Presents, and other event and security companies. The rapper was fatally stabbed backstage at the Once Upon a Time in LA festival in 2021. A separate lawsuit from his brother and entourage members is still scheduled for trial on Nov. 30, while settlement terms were not disclosed.
The estate, overseen by Drakeo’s mother, Darrylene Corniel, resolved its last negligence allegations against Live Nation, C3 Presents, and other festival promoters and security providers. A lawyer for the rapper’s son, Caiden Caldwell, said related claims also settled. Terms remain undisclosed.
A separate suit from his brother, Devante Caldwell, and entourage members is still scheduled for trial on Nov. 30. Drakeo, born Darrell Caldwell, was fatally stabbed backstage at BMO Stadium in December 2021 before his set at Once Upon a Time in LA. No arrests or charges have been announced. Claims against a Snoop Dogg-linked LLC were dropped; his company said he was only a performer.
The resolution may bring some closure to Drakeo’s family and could shape how festival promoters and security firms assess backstage safety. It may also influence pending litigation from his brother and entourage, though the undisclosed terms limit public insight. For concertgoers and artists, the case could heighten expectations around security at large events, while the unresolved criminal investigation may leave broader questions about accountability.
