Jeff Kaplan says he has cut himself off from Overwatch since leaving Blizzard

Former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan told GameSpot that he has avoided the game entirely since leaving Blizzard in 2021. He said his earlier departure from the World of Warcraft team in 2008 prepared him for the experience of handing a project to others. Kaplan described the break as detached and said he does not search for Overwatch or his name in connection with it.
Kaplan began at Blizzard in quality assurance on World of Warcraft and eventually led that team before moving to Overwatch. He has said his 2008 exit from WoW served as preparation for handing Overwatch to others in April 2021, describing the shift as realizing the project belonged to the team, players, and company rather than himself.
Since then he has avoided the game entirely — no videos, no community threads, no searches for his own name tied to it — and even told recommendation algorithms he's no longer interested. He later co-founded a studio with Tim Ford and is developing The Legend of California, a cowboy survival title.
Kaplan's detachment may resonate with players and developers who have watched creators step away from long-running franchises. It could reinforce conversations about burnout and ownership in game development, and may shape how fans interpret a director's silence after departure. For Blizzard's community, his avoidance might read as a clean break rather than ongoing commentary, potentially softening expectations that former leads will remain public voices for games they once shaped.
