Mathis Leads SWAC's 2026 Hall of Fame Inductees

Former Alabama A&M and Indianapolis Colts pass rusher Robert Mathis leads the SWAC's 2026 Hall of Fame class. The six inductees also include Brad Baxter, Lisa L. Powell, Alvin Moore, Willie H. Barnes Jr., and Roger Totten. The ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 11 at the Omni Hotel in Atlanta and will stream on SWAC TV.
Mathis, an Alabama A&M product, was a four-year starter from 1999 to 2002 and earned three All-SWAC nods. His 20 sacks as a senior set a Division I-AA single-season mark then, and he left with 44 sacks, 88.5 tackles for loss, 221 stops and 20 forced fumbles.
The class also honors Brad Baxter, Lisa L. Powell, Alvin Moore, Willie H. Barnes Jr. and Roger Totten. Baxter, an Alabama State running back, ended with 3,732 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns, later playing for the Jets. Induction is Dec. 11 at Atlanta's Omni Hotel, streaming on SWAC TV.
This recognition may bring renewed attention to SWAC athletes and HBCU sports history, potentially benefiting alumni, current students, and fans who value these legacies. Mathis's NFL profile could draw broader audiences to the conference and its Hall of Fame ceremony, while honoring figures like Baxter and the legends may strengthen institutional pride. The streaming option may also make the event more accessible, though its actual social reach remains uncertain.
