Paddington The Musical Sets Sydney Premiere for 2027

The Olivier-winning Paddington The Musical will open at Sydney's Capitol Theatre in September 2027, with casting to be announced later. The Australian production is presented by Sonia Friedman Productions, STUDIOCANAL, and others, with support from Destination NSW. Based on Michael Bond's books and the films, the musical features music and lyrics by Tom Fletcher, a book by Jessica Swale, and direction by Luke Sheppard.
Sydney’s Capitol Theatre will host the Australian premiere in September 2027, with performers named later. The city becomes the third market for the Olivier-winning show, after London’s West End and Broadway.
The production is backed by Sonia Friedman Productions, STUDIOCANAL, Eliza Lumley Productions for Universal Music UK, and Suzanne Jones of JONES Theatrical Group, plus Destination NSW. Adapted from Michael Bond’s A Bear Called Paddington and the STUDIOCANAL film, it has Fletcher’s songs, Swale’s book, and Sheppard’s direction.
The arrival of a major West End and Broadway musical could expand Sydney’s theatre calendar and draw interstate and overseas visitors, benefiting hospitality and arts workers. Families and younger audiences may gain access to a high-profile adaptation of a beloved character, while local performers and creatives could see new casting and production opportunities. Its success may also influence how international producers view Australian cities as launch markets.
