Windows 11 update resolves black-screen and Explorer crash bug

Microsoft has fixed a Windows 11 problem that produced black screens, delayed desktop access, and Explorer crashes after updates released since August. The issue primarily hit Azure Virtual Desktop hosts that use FSLogix for faster profile loading. The fix arrived in the October 13, 2026 Patch Tuesday updates, with a manual Explorer launch workaround and Known Issue Rollback policies offered for affected systems.
Microsoft documented that affected machines often showed a blank display after login, users sometimes had to start the desktop shell themselves, and Windows Explorer failures appeared in event logs. The problem was concentrated among Azure Virtual Desktop hosts relying on FSLogix to accelerate profile loading. The October 13, 2026 cumulative updates contain the repair.
For systems that cannot install them, manually starting explorer.exe through Task Manager's new-task option is a stopgap. Enterprise admins can apply KIR policies KB5124006 for 26H1 or KB5124010 for 25H2/24H2, then reboot.
The disruption may matter most to organizations running virtual desktops, where a failed sign-in or Explorer crash could interrupt work for many employees at once. IT teams may face pressure to deploy the October updates or KIR policies quickly, while smaller or unmanaged setups could rely on the manual Explorer workaround. The episode could also reinforce how dependent modern work is on cloud-hosted Windows environments and timely patching.
