Google pushes source links higher in AI search answers

Google is updating AI Overviews and AI Mode so inline links appear more often and higher up in responses. The company is testing top-of-response links for certain queries and expanding link carousels for timely articles. The changes aim to make sources easier to click amid concerns that AI-generated answers reduce traffic to publishers.
Google is adjusting its AI-generated search experiences so citations appear nearer the beginning of answers and more often. Besides that shift, it is trying top-placed source links for queries tied to a narrow set of providers or facts, such as airline refunds, and broadening article carousels for recent coverage across additional regions and languages.
The company also plans more noticeable end-of-answer links with thumbnails and a design meant to invite clicks, and is testing links to publisher or creator profiles inside AI Mode. Separately, over 400 publishers have joined its News AI licensing pilot, with Axios, CNN, and the Financial Times among new participants.
The change may affect people who rely on AI summaries for quick answers, since clearer citations could make it easier to verify claims and reach original reporting. Publishers could see modest referral gains if readers click through more often, though the overall effect on traffic may remain uncertain. Google’s role as an intermediary could become more visible, shaping which sources receive attention. This may influence how creators and newsrooms optimize content for AI-driven search.
