CoreWeave Debt Worries Pressure Nvidia and Broader AI Infrastructure Stocks

CoreWeave's shares and bonds dropped as investors questioned the debt financing behind its AI data center expansion, sending bond yields higher. Nvidia also weakened because it is a major supplier, investor and customer of CoreWeave, linking the chipmaker to the cloud provider's financial risks. The concerns spread across semiconductor and cloud infrastructure stocks as inflation data and rising borrowing costs weighed on the sector.
CoreWeave’s 2032 notes carrying a 9.625% coupon traded at yields near 15%, with some quotes above 16%, a sign creditors sought more compensation for risk. Its stock fell over 15% Wednesday and kept sliding Thursday.
As of June 30, CoreWeave disclosed about $35.1 billion of balance-sheet debt plus sizable lease commitments. It projected 2026 capital outlays of $35–39 billion against revenue of $12.4–13.2 billion, underscoring reliance on outside funding.
If financing costs stay elevated, AI data center buildouts may slow, potentially affecting cloud customers, researchers, startups, and workers tied to chip and infrastructure supply chains. Investors and pension funds holding related debt could face volatility. Consumers might see AI services priced differently if providers pass on higher capital costs. The episode may also prompt closer scrutiny of how AI expansion is funded, though demand for computing power could remain resilient.
