Crypto Market Cap Jumps 39.6% in Q3 Despite Weaker Trading Volume

Crypto's total market value climbed 39.6% in the third quarter of 2026 to about $3.0 trillion, snapping three straight quarterly declines. Average daily trading volume slipped 8.6% to $73.3 billion, even as perpetual futures open interest increased. August supplied more than half the quarterly gain, Ethereum outpaced Bitcoin, and Binance expanded its spot market share despite lower overall exchange activity.
The rebound added $840.1 billion, ending three quarterly declines and producing the best quarter since late 2024. Total capitalization still sat 4.0% below the start of 2026. August supplied $489.8 billion, a 21.8% increase, while average daily volume fell to $73.3 billion, the third straight quarterly drop. September averaged $94.8 billion daily, up from July’s $57.7 billion.
Ethereum climbed 71.0% to $2,684 and attracted $3.1 billion into US spot ETH ETFs, though its average daily volume dropped 23.2% to $11.5 billion. Binance’s spot share rose to 42.7% from 38.7%, even as top-10 spot volume fell 14.2% to $1.65 trillion. Perpetual futures open interest gained 40.6%, topping $100 billion for the first time since 2025’s third quarter.
Higher crypto valuations could lift portfolios for holders and ETF investors, while thinner spot volume may make prices more sensitive to large orders. Rising perpetual futures open interest suggests greater leverage, which may amplify gains but also liquidation risks for traders. Binance’s growing spot share could concentrate market influence, potentially affecting fees, liquidity, and resilience. Regulators and retail
