Mastercard and BVNK Debut Stablecoin Payments Platform for Merchants and Bank Transfers
Mastercard and BVNK introduced the Global Money Platform, which links stablecoin balances with card payments, currency conversion and international transfers. Banks, fintechs and businesses can offer accounts holding both fiat and stablecoins through a single API. The service follows Mastercard’s August acquisition of BVNK and is expected to expand to more than 40 currencies across over 200 countries by 2027.
The Global Money Platform is the first significant product rollout since Mastercard bought BVNK in August. That deal was valued at as much as $1.8 billion, including contingent payments, underscoring Mastercard’s push into infrastructure linking stablecoins with established finance.
Early integrators include Nuvei, Marqeta, Ontop, Beem and Almond FinTech. The service also links to Mastercard Move, giving access to over 17 billion payment endpoints. Mastercard and BVNK expect coverage to reach more than 40 currencies across over 200 countries and territories by 2027, with possible later uses involving tokenized deposits and autonomous AI commerce.
If stablecoin-linked accounts become widely available, consumers, merchants, banks and fintechs may gain faster, lower-friction cross-border payments and card spending. People in countries with limited banking access could benefit from alternative money rails, though reliance on private platforms and conversion risks may raise concerns about consumer protection, volatility and oversight. The eventual social effect likely depends on safeguards, adoption and whether these services complement or complicate existing financial systems.
