Zelensky signals openness to U.S.-led talks to end war

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine is prepared to negotiate in any format with U.S. involvement to end the Russia-Ukraine war. His comments came after President Trump paused sanctions on Russia that were about to take effect. Zelensky said Washington signaled a possible meeting next week and mentioned a potential trilateral summit with Russia.
Zelensky said Ukraine would enter negotiations in any location or structure if the United States takes part. He noted Washington hinted at a meeting next week and said a three-way summit with Russia might be possible, perhaps at December’s G20 in Miami or in Europe, though Russia and the U.S. have not confirmed.
Trump’s order paused penalties that were due under the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, saying it advanced U.S. interests without explaining why. The prior week, his administration eased restrictions on Russian diesel as fuel costs rose. U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff had visited both countries last month.
If talks advance, they could lower violence and ease pressure on energy markets, affecting Ukrainian civilians, European consumers, and global fuel prices. Sanctions relief may alter Russia’s calculations and Ukraine’s leverage, while U.S. voters could weigh affordability and foreign policy before the midterms. A stalled process may prolong uncertainty for affected communities and markets.
