Turner seeks congressional probe into Ukraine Starlink outage

Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) is pressing for a congressional inquiry after Ukrainian troops briefly lost access to a military Starlink service. He rejected Secretary of State Marco Rubio's explanation as inadequate and said lawmakers must identify who was responsible because lives are at stake. Reports indicated the outage affected objects moving faster than 100 mph, limiting Ukrainian drones, planes and helicopters, while Elon Musk and President Trump denied causing it.
Turner, an Ohio Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, wants lawmakers to examine the temporary loss of Ukraine’s military satellite access. He said Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s characterization of the incident as something that merely occurred did not satisfy congressional oversight needs.
The affected system was Starshield, the military counterpart to Starlink. According to a source cited by The Hill, access was restricted for objects exceeding 100 miles per hour, affecting Ukrainian drones, aircraft and helicopters. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later said speeds had not fully returned to earlier levels, though service was improving. President Trump denied responsibility, while Musk deferred to him.
The episode may intensify scrutiny of how private satellite networks shape modern warfare and U.S. support for Ukraine. Ukrainian troops and civilians could be affected if battlefield communications and drone operations remain limited. Lawmakers may use a probe to examine accountability between SpaceX, the executive branch and the military, potentially influencing future oversight of commercial systems used in conflicts. It could also affect public trust in assurances from officials and companies about service reliability.
