Obama defends Ilhan Omar after border czar floats denaturalization

Barack Obama criticized Tom Homan, Trump's border czar, for saying Ilhan Omar could potentially be stripped of citizenship and deported. Obama urged Americans to defend the congresswoman and warned that such treatment of an elected official could become a precedent. Homan said denaturalization is possible if someone lied during the naturalization process, following a federal search of Omar's home.
Obama responded on X after Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, told Fox News that Omar could face denaturalization if evidence showed she lied during naturalization. Homan described the procedure as lengthy but previously used. Federal agents searched Omar’s Washington home on 12 October.
The inquiry examines whether Omar or relatives broke laws while securing her citizenship. She came from Somalia at 12; her father naturalized when she was 17, making her a citizen. Her father died in 2020. The investigation began weeks before November midterms, where Omar is on the ballot.
The dispute could heighten anxiety among naturalized citizens and immigrant communities, who may worry that citizenship can be challenged for political reasons. It may also chill elected officials’ willingness to criticize the executive branch and shape voter perceptions before the midterms. If such efforts proceed, they could set a precedent affecting people beyond one congresswoman, though legal and political consequences remain uncertain.
