Maja Chwalinska rallied past Sonay Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the Wuhan Open final to claim her first WTA tour title. The Polish player had beaten Iga Swiatek during the tournament and will enter the top 20 at No. 11 on Monday. Chwalinska, once outside the top 100 and without a sponsor at Roland-Garros, had only four prior tour-level wins before 2026; she now owns 18 this season. She earned $665,000 and 1,000 points.
Chwalinska's breakthrough could inspire young athletes, particularly those who lack early funding or high rankings, by suggesting that progress can come later. Her win may increase attention on Polish women's tennis and on WTA events in Wuhan. Kartal's run might raise visibility for lower-ranked British players and competitors returning from injury.
