Mona Zaki Talks Constant Reinvention as El Gouna Celebrates Her Career

El Gouna Film Festival presented Mona Zaki with its Career Achievement Award during its opening ceremony. The Egyptian actress has worked for more than 30 years and is still under 50. In an interview with Variety, she described her career as an ongoing reinvention and said she easily grows tired of herself.
At its ninth edition, running Oct. 15–23, the El Gouna Film Festival gave Mona Zaki its Career Achievement Award during the opening night. The Egyptian performer has spent over thirty years in film and remains younger than fifty.
Speaking with Variety beside the Red Sea, Zaki framed her long filmography as an evolving journey rather than a finished record. She noted that she tires of herself quickly, which has pushed her to keep changing and to challenge what viewers assume about her.
The honor may reinforce El Gouna’s role as a regional showcase for established and emerging Arab cinema. By highlighting a long, still-evolving career, the award could encourage audiences and industry figures to value reinvention over fixed images of stardom. It may also draw more attention to Egyptian film talent and to women’s sustained creative influence in the region.
