Olivia Rodrigo Video Team Denies AI Use in 'Expectations' Clip

The artists behind Olivia Rodrigo's 'Expectations' music video have responded to claims that the clip used generative AI. Designer Jack Harrison and Rodrigo's official fan account shared behind-the-scenes footage showing hand-drawn 2D and 3D animations and analog treatments. The accusations centered on a scene near the three-minute mark where viewers questioned inconsistencies in the singers' fingers.
The video accompanied a remix of “Expectations” featuring Chappell Roan and arrived on Friday. Doubts about generative AI focused on a segment near the three-minute mark, where vintage-style logos and animated versions of both singers move across the screen. Some viewers cited odd-looking fingers as evidence.
Jack Harrison oversaw the clip’s analog treatment. Rodrigo’s fan account @LiviesHQ shared drafts, 3D animation recordings, and other behind-the-scenes material. The team reportedly built animations with 2D and 3D tools, transferred the files to a Windows Vista computer, and captured the screen using a high-resolution camera. Rodrigo’s representative did not immediately reply to Rolling Stone’s inquiry.
This dispute may shape how audiences evaluate music videos as AI tools become more common. Fans and artists could become more skeptical of polished visuals, while creators may feel pressure to document their processes to avoid accusations. The episode may also influence how platforms and labels discuss disclosure, potentially affecting trust between viewers and the entertainment industry.
