AMD extends FSR 4.1 upscaling to older Radeon GPUs, Xbox consoles, and Ryzen chips

AMD has made FSR 4.1 available on Radeon RX 6000 graphics, Xbox Series X/S consoles, Ryzen AI Max and AI 9 processors, and Z2 handheld chips. The company modified the upscaler's neural model for INT8 shader hardware and produced a smaller version for handhelds. A quick test on an RX 6900 XT showed roughly a 13% frame-rate cost in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K with Balanced mode, while image quality improved.
AMD’s FSR 4.1 rollout follows earlier FSR 4 availability on RX 9000 and RX 7000 cards; RX 6000 support had been promised for early 2027. The company adapted the upscaler’s neural model for INT8 shader hardware, while RX 9000 uses FP8 matrix acceleration. A handheld-specific build is less than half the full version’s size.
In a quick RX 6900 XT test, Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K in FSR Balanced mode showed about a 13% frame-rate cost, with improved image quality. AMD also cites better frame pacing for FSR Frame Generation, planned Vulkan support, and broader FSR Ray Regeneration availability, including Warhammer 40,000: Darktide.
The change could benefit owners of older graphics cards, consoles, and handheld PCs by improving image quality without replacing hardware, potentially extending device usefulness and reducing upgrade pressure. Developers may find broader hardware support makes advanced upscaling easier to target, though results could vary by device and driver availability. Because OEM updates are required for consoles and some handhelds, adoption may be uneven, and the performance cost may matter most on lower-end systems.
