Chipotle Shares Slide as Analyst Downgrades on Weak October Sales

Chipotle shares fell 4.1% after TD Cowen downgraded the stock to Hold and reduced its price target. The analyst expects third-quarter results slightly above consensus but sees October sales falling short of the fourth-quarter acceleration it had anticipated. TD Cowen now projects same-store sales below consensus for the fourth quarter and 2027, making the company's Oct. 28 update a key focus.
TD Cowen lowered Chipotle to Hold from Buy and trimmed its price target to $32 from $44, and the shares dropped 4.1%. The firm still sees third-quarter results modestly ahead of consensus, but October sales look weaker than the fourth-quarter lift it had projected. It now expects comparable-store sales to trail consensus in both the fourth quarter and 2027.
Chipotle reports after the close on Oct. 28, when its fourth-quarter trend so far will be in focus. The stock trades at 23.4 times forward earnings, a five-year low and well under its 41.1 times average for that span. TD Cowen also lowered estimates for the fourth quarter, 2027 and 2028.
The downgrade may mainly affect Chipotle shareholders and funds holding the stock, including retirement savers with broad market exposure. If sales stay soft, the company could lean more on promotions and menu launches, which may influence consumer choices and store operations. Employees could also be affected through staffing or investment decisions, though the broader social impact is likely modest.
