Kouame, a 17-year-old French wildcard ranked 194th, had arrived after eliminating Lorenzo Sonego in a first-round match that went 7-6(2), 6-4. Against Musetti he broke for 2-1, saved break points early, but right-thigh pain and later stomach trouble interrupted him; he took a medical timeout and at one stage consulted his team about continuing.
Musetti, seeded sixth and ranked 25th, had begun with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Matteo Arnaldi. His first-serve rate was 65 percent, and he won 82 percent of points on that delivery. The Lyon run is his sixth quarterfinal this year, following Hong Kong, the Australian Open, Barcelona, Washington and Cincinnati. He next meets Valentin Vacherot or Luca Van Assche.
