Crypto-Linked Stocks Climb After OCC Finalizes Stablecoin Rulebook

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency completed rules for stablecoin issuers under the GENIUS Act, set to take effect alongside the law on Jan. 18, 2027. Strategy rose 7% and Galaxy Digital 8%, while Circle and Coinbase also gained as bitcoin traded about 3% higher. The article notes Strategy does not issue stablecoins, so its move mainly reflected leveraged bitcoin exposure.
The OCC’s completed framework for stablecoin issuers under the GENIUS Act is set to start with the law on Jan. 18, 2027. Comptroller Jonathan Gould said it establishes standards for reserves, redemption, and risk management.
Crypto equities rose alongside bitcoin, which gained roughly 3% to about $84,700. Strategy added 7% even though it does not issue stablecoins, while Galaxy Digital gained 8%, Strive 14%, Circle 5%, and Coinbase 4%. Strategy’s move mainly reflected leveraged bitcoin exposure; its debt grew to more than three times its fiscal 2023 level by fiscal 2025.
The finalized stablecoin rules could affect people who use dollar-pegged tokens for payments or savings, as clearer reserve and redemption standards may shape trust and availability. Crypto-linked stocks may react to regulatory signals, influencing investors and retirement funds with exposure. However, because Strategy’s gain reflects leveraged bitcoin exposure rather than stablecoin issuance, the broader social effect may depend less on this rule than on bitcoin volatility and index decisions.
