Swiss Regulator Clears First Spot Bitcoin ETF for Retail Investors
FINMA approved BBIT, described as Switzerland’s first exchange-traded fund to invest directly in bitcoin and be available to retail investors. The Zurich-based BIT Asset Management fund is expected to begin trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange in November 2026 and will be accessible through ordinary brokerage accounts. FINMA classified it as an alternative investment fund and exempted it from standard diversification requirements, citing bitcoin’s trading history and volume.
FINMA approved BBIT, a Zurich-managed BIT Asset Management fund due on SIX Swiss Exchange in November 2026. Retail investors could buy it through ordinary brokerage accounts, subject to broker rules and availability. FINMA categorized it as an “other fund for alternative investments” and waived standard diversification rules, citing bitcoin’s trading history and volume.
BBIT is a Swiss collective investment scheme, not a debt-based ETP, so its assets are segregated and ring-fenced. It will use independent custody and daily holdings reporting. FINMA said the relief applies only to bitcoin and that other providers have submitted or announced similar products.
The approval may widen retail access to bitcoin in Switzerland by letting ordinary brokerage customers hold a regulated fund rather than a bespoke crypto account. That could appeal to investors seeking familiar fund governance and segregated custody, while also exposing less experienced savers to sharp price swings. It may encourage other providers and regulators to consider similar structures, though FINMA’s warnings suggest adoption could remain cautious and suitability checks important.
