Machinarium studio rejects AI-made tribute and calls it an insult to its craft

Nura Studios posted an AI-generated tribute to Amanita Design's Machinarium, then deleted it after criticism. Amanita Design said the video was disgusting and had nothing to do with its work, while Nura's CEO apologized. Amanita's next game, Machinarium 2, was announced earlier this month.
Nura Studios, which presents itself as an AI-focused storytelling outfit, shared a tribute on October 20 to Amanita Design’s 2009 cult favorite Machinarium. The post was removed after backlash. Nura’s CEO, Sylvio Drouin, later apologized, saying the company had intended an homage and had deleted the posts.
Amanita Design, a Czech studio known for a highly recognizable visual style, rejected that framing. It said the video looked repulsive, had no connection to its work or craft, and that a genuine tribute should be made by hand. Amanita has not said publicly that it accepts the apology. Machinarium 2 was announced earlier this month.
The dispute may sharpen audience scrutiny of AI-generated fan work and corporate tributes, potentially affecting how small studios and artists guard distinctive styles. It could also shape how AI companies approach creative communities, since public backlash can damage trust. Players and fans may become more attentive to provenance and labor behind game art, though the long-term effect on AI adoption in entertainment remains uncertain.
