LaPorta Airs Contract Disappointment as Lions Extension Talks Linger
Detroit tight end Sam LaPorta voiced disappointment about not having a contract extension, saying he has taken on injury risk while the team has not made a corresponding financial commitment. He noted he played through a back injury last season and is producing at a high level in 2026. LaPorta said he will keep performing and could leave in free agency if no deal is reached.
LaPorta made his remarks on Pardon My Take, saying the physical toll of playing without a new deal has been frustrating. He missed Detroit’s final eight games in 2025 after a fully herniated disc, yet had set personal bests in yards per target (10.0) and yards per game (54.3) before the injury.
In 2026 he has 27 receptions, 316 yards and three scores, ranking among the top six tight ends in each category. He is tracking toward career highs in catches and yards. Detroit has already extended Jahmyr Gibbs and Jack Campbell, while Brian Branch also awaits a new deal.
The standoff could affect Lions fans and fantasy football participants by keeping uncertainty around a productive tight end, while teammates and contract negotiations may feel pressure from the public comments. It may also shape how players and teams discuss injury risk and contract security, potentially influencing fan perceptions of athlete leverage. For Detroit, a departure or tag could alter offensive plans and community attachment to a popular player.
