Tractor Supply Beats Q3 EPS Estimates but Margin and Sales Trends Weigh on Shares

Tractor Supply reported Q3 2026 revenue of $3.91 billion and diluted EPS of $0.43, with EPS ahead of consensus. Comparable-store sales rose 0.4%, gross margin narrowed to 36.4%, and the stock fell premarket as investors focused on margin pressure and cautious guidance.
Tractor Supply's quarterly revenue reached $3.91 billion, narrowly above the $3.894 billion consensus, while diluted EPS of $0.43 topped the $0.4159 estimate. Same-store sales increased 0.4%, far below the prior year's 3.9% gain. Gross margin fell to 36.4% from 37.4%, and operating income declined 10.2% to $307.7 million.
Net income was $224.7 million, down 13.3%. Management said comps improved from a July decline to gains in August and September, with digital sales up double digits. SG&A rose 6.8% to $1.12 billion. The company returned $213.4 million to shareholders, opened 23 Tractor Supply stores, and closed 74 Petsense locations. It reaffirmed full-year adjusted EPS guidance of $1.90 to $2.00.
Tractor Supply’s margin pressure and cautious sales outlook could influence how it prices everyday farm, pet, and hardware products, affecting rural households and small suppliers. If management slows store investment or staffing to protect profits, local retail jobs and service availability may feel pressure. Conversely, continued digital growth and store openings could broaden access in some communities. Investors may also reassess similar retailers, potentially affecting retirement and savings portfolios.
