Neon is collaborating with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the mayor’s office to host four complimentary screenings of Once Upon a Time in Harlem on Oct. 24 and 25. They will take place at AMC Magic Johnson Harlem, Film Forum, and Film at Lincoln Center.
William Greaves, a pioneering filmmaker in New York, conceived and shot the documentary; his son David Greaves directed it. The film explores the Harlem Renaissance’s long cultural reach and the importance of artistic and creative life, connecting viewers with the artists, narratives, and concepts that helped shape New York and American culture.
The free screenings could make this documentary more accessible to New Yorkers who might otherwise skip ticketed cultural events, especially Harlem residents and casual filmgoers. By placing the film in three distinct venues, the program may reach audiences with different relationships to the city’s cultural institutions. It could also prompt wider discussion of the Harlem Renaissance’s legacy and may serve as a model for future public-private cultural offerings, though its broader effect would depend on attendance and community response.
