Amazon MGM Acquires Dark Romance ‘Butcher & Blackbird’ With Emma Laird and Thomas Doherty

Amazon MGM Studios has bought the film package Butcher & Blackbird, a dark romance adapted from Brynne Weaver’s bestselling book, for Prime Video. Chris McKay will direct and Emma Laird and Thomas Doherty will star. Laura Kosann wrote the screenplay, with later revisions by Ari Berkowitz and Ava Tramer.
Amazon MGM Studios has secured the film package for Prime Video, with a worldwide release planned. Lyrical Media and Embrace sold the project, which adapts Brynne Weaver’s popular novel. Chris McKay, known for The Tomorrow War, will direct.
Emma Laird and Thomas Doherty are attached to lead. Laura Kosann drafted the screenplay, later revised by Ari Berkowitz and Ava Tramer. Alexander Black and Embrace produce; Weaver, McKay, Arlen Konopaki, Jon Rosenberg, and Jonathan Faust executive produce.
The acquisition may expand Prime Video’s dark romance offerings and draw existing readers of Weaver’s book, while giving Laird and Doherty higher-profile roles. It could also influence how streaming services package niche romance genres for global audiences, potentially affecting authors, fans, and filmmakers seeking adaptations.
