The Fantasticks Arrives on Broadway for the First Time

The Fantasticks begins its first Broadway production at the Hayes Theater on October 22, with opening night scheduled for November 16. Christopher Gattelli directs and choreographs a reimagined version by Tom Jones. Ruthie Ann Miles, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer, Maxim Chlumecky, and Nathan Levy lead the cast.
The Hayes Theater will host the musical’s inaugural Broadway run, starting performances Oct. 22 and aiming for a Nov. 16 opening. Christopher Gattelli, a Tony recipient, handles both direction and choreography.
The show’s earlier Off-Broadway engagement lasted 42 years, from 1960 through 2002, and is described as the longest-running musical. Tom Jones revised the book and lyrics, with Harvey Schmidt’s music, in a version centered on two young men and their mothers’ matchmaking scheme.
The arrival of a beloved Off-Broadway title on Broadway could draw longtime fans and newcomers, potentially broadening the show’s audience and giving its cast and creative team greater visibility. It may also add a familiar, accessible option to Broadway’s slate, which could affect ticket demand, tourism, and how producers weigh revivals of historic musicals. The impact is likely modest, as it is one production, but it may influence conversations about which works get Broadway platforms.
